Team

Thank you for your interest in participating in the 2009 Walk for Autism – Virginia which will provide funds for autism treatment to local families. This year’s event features improved communication with you including a monthly e-newsletter and expanded event information available 24/7 at this site. There is no registration fee to register as a team; however, we encourage Walk participants to raise money for autism treatments. All registered participants will receive a free t-shirt! Individuals who raise $200 or more receive a car magnet.

When you register a team, you will register yourself first. If someone would like to join your team, he/she can click on “register as a team”, and join the team by clicking on the team names in the registration form. Be prepared to provide a fundraising goal. It’s simply an estimate, and you will not be held to it.

After you register, you’ll want to visit Firstgiving.org where you will find free online tools to help you raise money to support the Walk for Autism – Virginia which provides mini-grants for autism treatments. Through FirstGiving, you can create messages to send to your family and friends and track your progress. You will create an initial thank you note, and once you receive a donation, the site will automatically send the donor a thank you email.

Every person participating in the walk MUST be registered, including infants in strollers.

REGISTER AS A TEAM!

The Team

A team is a group who registers to participate in the event under a team name. (If you are a family and other individuals are walking with you , please register as a team). Creating a team is a terrific way to pay tribute to someone who has been affected by autism. All Walkers and runners will receive a free Walk t-shirt. Team members are encouraged to request donations from family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. All donations received by team members are “credited” to the team and are tracked on a First Giving web page. Team members keep in contact with the team captain and usually meet each other on Walk day to start the Walk together. You can consider creating a Company Team so that each part of your organization can be involved separately under the Company Team.

Walk Teams - This is the most common type of registration. Teams consist of families, friends or co-workers walking together. On the day of the walk, only the Team Captain will need to sign in for the entire team. To register as a team, register under the Team Registration Page. Before registering, you will need to select a Team Captain and a Team Name. Please let the others walking with you know your Team Captain and Team Name. When they register, they will fill in the Team Name and Team Captain Name to be associated with your Team. Use the Team Captain Kit to help you manage your team.

What is a Team Captain?

A team captain is the leader of the team and registers the team when signing up to participate in the event. You can easily follow the step-by-step directions to register. After registering, the team captain will create a personalized team web page link at First Giving. Your team page will enable potential team members and donors to learn more about your team and the cause. The page also facilitates on-line donations. What are the Team Captain’s Responsibilities?
Your team name is your choice. It can begin with “team”, A team captain, as indicated above, registers the team and sets up the team page. Part of establishing the team web page is determining your team goals. We encourage you to establish an ambitious goal! You can recruit team members through emails and general recruiting. A team captain should keep in touch with team members to organize the team, motivate members, and encourage fundraising. Helpful tools and tips for team Captains are provided in the Team Captain Kit.

Choosing a Team Name

Your team name is your choice. It can begin with “team”, but it doesn’t have too. Some ideas are:
• The name of someone you are honoring
• Words that rhyme or start with the same letter, such as “Riley’s Rockets” or “Lou’s Crew”
• Something you want to do, such as “Solve the Autism Puzzle”
• A witty quote from a TV/movie reference, politician, or sports team

Is the Team Captain Required to Be at the Event?

We have planned a fun, educational, and lively event. Attendance is encouraged at this memorable event; however, it is not mandatory for the team captain or team members to participate in the race. We understand that circumstances change, and an important goal of a team is to raise funds for autism treatments. Fundraising is generated primarily through the First Giving website, thus a major contribution can be achieved without attendance. Team Incentives: The team pays for the shirts, enabling more funds raised at the Walk going towards autism treatments and support. (Often team captains are able to have their employer, or another local business, pay for the cost of the shirts in return for their company logo on the shirt as a team sponsor). Many teams list their major contributors on the back of the shirt as a way of thanking them for their support.

Why Team T-Shirts?

Team T-Shirts help build motivation and enthusiasm for the Walk during the weeks before the event and unite a team on Walk day. They can also help you find team members on the event day.

Who Pays for the Shirts?

The team pays for the shirts, enabling more funds raised at the Walk going towards autism treatments and support. Tips for Success with Team T-Shirts

• Be creative! If your shirt is unique, the more likely your team will wear it before and after the Walk.
• Color! The shirts that stand out are colorful and bright.
• Tell Your Story! When you create your t-shirt design, include a name or photo of the person/child for whom your team is walking.
